Census Nipissing - Killarney
On my trip to Killarney on May 31st, 2003 at the graveyard in behind the Catholic
Church, I found a gravestone with the following inscription:
MARY WIFE OF PETER PELON DIED OCT 10, 1906 AT AGED 80 YRS.
The date of death and the age, correspond with the information I have on Marie.
It is funny that Marie would be buried with the Pelon name. She did marry Joseph Adams before she died.
Mary appears in the book “The Old Folks, Families of Killarney, Book
2, page 18, 26”.

I BEMANAKINANG Bef. 1890, son of
MICHEL BEMANAKINANG and MADELINE RECOLLET. He was born
January 29, 1866 in Killarney, Ontario, Canada, and died May 25, 1893 by drowning. She
married (4) JAMES ZEPHYRIN
MARTEL September 1896 in Byng Inlet, Ontario, Canada, son of ZEPHYRIN MARTEL and PHILOMENE BOURASSA. He was born
Bet. 1871 - 1872 in Quebec, Canada, and died June 05, 1933 in Killarney, Ontario, Canada.
Notes for SOPHIE PILON:
On her
Baptismal Certificate her name was spelt PILLON; her father is listed as "Pierre
Pillon" and "Marie Tranche". She was at least half native.
I received a genealogical list from the Wicky Reserve, Roman Catholic Parish,
for the Pilon Clan: The children listed for Sophie were:
ADAMS, Mary
PILON, Joseph born 16 Jan 1880
PILON, Etienne born 21 Aug 1882
MAIDEN, Josephine born 1884
MADEN, Maria Anna born 14 Feb 1884
MAIDENS, Seraphina born April 1885
PILON, Marie born 10 Jan 1888
PILON, Francis born 19 Jan 1890
ADAMS, Charles 1894 died 15 Jan 1904
She had two children with V. Biland, four children with George Maiden, one child
with Benang (Francis - Augustine Jr. was Francis half brother on his father side) and she adopted two children with Martel.
After
George Maiden was reported dead (with no proof of death), Sophie married James Martelle at Byng Inlet in September 1896. A complaint was made to the Jesuit priest and Sophie was barred from receiving holy
sacraments. The Roman Catholic Bishop investigated the situation, and Sophie
was again admitted to the sacraments. (Presumably, the Catholic Church also recognized her second marriage.) At the time of George's disappearance, some people around Killarney believed that George had been murdered,
or that he abandoned his family. In any case, he was never heard from again.
The Old Folks, Families of Killarney, Book 1, page 162
CENSUS RETURNS:
On the 1871, Sophie is 9 years old living with her parents Pierre and Marie
Pilon.
On the 1891, Sophia Maden is 27 years old apparently living with Joseph Adams
(her stepfather) and her mother Mary Pelon. At this point her daughter Josephine
Maden who is 5 years old is also living with her.
On the 1901, Josephine Adams (Maiden) is 15 years old living with her grandparents
Joseph Adams (step grandparents) and Mary Adams (Pilon). Sophia no longer appears

Notes for GEORGE MAIDENS:
Adele
Loosemore from Killarney, author of “The Old Folks, Families of Killarney” believes that George was also native,
I have found no proof of this.
There
is a George Maidens whom appears in the 1871 Census; he is 12 years old; his origins were Irish and he was of the R.C. religion. This census was done at District 057, Sub district C in Douro. If this is the husband of Sophie he would have been about 23 to 25 years of age in 1883 when he married
Sophie.
George
was officially declared dead by the Bishop of the RC Church, with no proof of death.
This allowed Sophie to remarry with the Church’s blessing.
Marriage Notes for SOPHIE

Sophie's last name is spelled "Pillon" on her Marriage Certificate. Her parents are listed as Pierre "Pillon" and Marie "Tranche".

Notes for JAMES ZEPHYRIN MARTEL:
Name could be spelled "Martelle, Martin, Madden, Maiden or Maidens". James was also native. I have read that
he came to Killarney from French River, Ontario. I do not believe that James
and Sophie had any natural children of their own, although they did adopt at least two children. James was a widower when he died at the age of 61 years.
